Teaching Social Understanding

The INCLUSION Program offers schools the opportunity to bring together young people with social cognition gaps or deficits for on-site social understanding groups. These groups help young people learn how to navigate the complexities of social interactions and to develop the skills necessary to build lasting relationships.

Based on Michelle Garcia Winner’s ILAUGH® model and Superflex® curriculum, coaches guide group members as they learn new ways to interact more thoughtfully with peers and adults. Social coaches address social thinking in real-time, natural, and engaging ways.

The participants learn how to:

  • Listen with their eyes and brain
  • Show others that they are thinking about them through actions and words
  • Consider another’s perspective in the decision-making process

What Is Social Cognition?

Social cognition involves everything from reading facial expressions to working cooperatively within a group setting. These skills allow us to behave appropriately in social interactions. Social cognition impacts all aspects of our lives, at home, at work, or in social situations.

Social Thinking Groups:

  • Meet weekly for 45-60 minutes.
  • Consist of four or five students with two social coaches.
  • Include guided instruction, modeling, flexible thinking, interactive games, and fun activities to teach social thinking skills.
  • Training and support services for family members and schools.
