About Zoe's Race
The first annual "Zoe's Race" was held on August 30, 2009. The idea for the race came about when Erika Nestor, mother of six-year-old Zoe, began to renovate her home to accommodate her six-year-old daughter Zoe. When Zoe was about 18-months-old, she nearly drowned. The accident left her very disabled and in a wheelchair.
As Erika Nestor and her husband, David, began renovating their home to accommodate their daughter's special needs, they realized that there were limited funds available to assist folks who needed to make their homes accessible for family members with a disability. For families that have children in wheelchairs, homes with stairs, small doorways and bathrooms, and other structural barriers make every day more challenging than it may already be.
In 2009, HowardCenter's Zoe’s Race raised over $20,000 to help families with children served by HowardCenter Developmental Disabilities who need assistance to make their homes accessible. In the spring of 2010, three families received grants to modify their homes. Local contractor Mark Bonser and architect Christian Brown generously donated their time to this project, and many local companies are contributing labor and materials.
