Northern Lights is a residential program for 11 women who are under the supervision of the Department of Corrections and who have reached their minimum sentence and have at least one year of supervision left on their maximum sentence. They must be eligible for a Section 8 voucher. The program targets women from Chittenden County, but women from other counties may be accepted on a case by case basis.
In addition to residential support, the program offers individual and group counseling, parenting support, and employment through collaborations with community partners. The mission is to help women build a safe, healthy, and productive life in the community while living independently.
Clients are referred by the Department of Corrections staff at the women’s prison. In addition, area residential facilities also make referrals.
Section 8 Housing Support
The Section 8 housing program is a federal program that can help individuals and families pay for housing costs. Eligibility for the program is based on household income and family size. To apply for a voucher, individuals need to contact their local housing authority.
